Meet the Team
Casey Schumaker
Casey was in the construction industry for 20 years before transitioning to Lake Mills Lumber in January of 2026. In that time he was a part of small area crews that built many new homes as well as additions, decks, and interior finishes. While working for himself beginning in 2021, he did many different projects including custom cabinetry and furniture building.
Chris Bertelson
Chris joined Lake Mills Lumber in January 2026. He previously worked for his family business Heartland Wood Products in Redwood Falls, MN before moving back to Albert Lea, MN in 2013 when he began working for Root River Hardwoods. Although Chris comes from the interior millwork and hardwoods world he is well versed in the products available at Lake Mills Lumber and would be glad to help you with at any stage of your project.
Howard Peterson
Howard began working at Lake Mills Lumber in 1998 and he is well known by many of our Lake Mills area customers. With many years of experience in lumber sales, Howard is very efficient and accurate in his project estimating abilities and his knowledge of building products is excellent. If you’re looking for something we don’t stock or order for customers regularly, Howard is a great resource for those unique, difficult to find items.
Our History
Founded by Vernon Helgeson, we started as a COOP in late 1890’s, and then became a lumberyard in 1950s. Vernon's son Don Helgeson took over 1980s’ with wife Julie and ran it until 2026 when Casey & Abby Schumaker and Chris Bertelson purchased the business.
